Oxygen

Oxygen is vital to the healing process. In acute athletic injuries such as sprains and strains for example, the injured area becomes swollen and inflamed. Swelling further interferes with circulating oxygen by constricting blood supply around the injured area, slowing down the healing process. Typically, only red blood cells have the ability to carry oxygen to injured parts. However, during Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, oxygen molecules become soluble. This enables them to cross over all cell membranes and provides up to 20 times normal oxygen levels. The extra oxygen is dissolved into and readily transported by all body fluids, including plasma, intra and extracellular fluid, cerebrospinal, lymph, and synovial fluid.

The injured area is suddenly provided with several alternate routes for receiving oxygen, accelerating the athlete’s recovery. Concussions and Hyperbaric Therapy

“Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death and disability in the US. Approximately 70-90% of the TBI cases are classified as mild, and up to 25% of them will not recover and suffer chronic neurocognitive impairment.”  

Concussion is a mild form of traumatic brain injury. It can be caused from shaking the head violently, bumping or getting hit in the head.   This abrupt motion of the head will cause the brain to move and smash up against the inside of the skull damaging the brain, blood vessels and nerve tissue.

Signs of concussion can be tricky. Symptoms may be immediate or take days to show.

Concussions happen at all levels of athletics. An estimated 300,000 sports-related concussions occur annually in the U.S. and contact sports, such as football, soccer and hockey produce the highest incidence. Current research is providing evidence that even mild, repeated concussions produce far reaching cumulative problems and can a have serious impact on an athlete’s health and future quality life. Neurologists have recently officially labeled this condition of repetitive concussion as “chronic traumatic encephalopathy.”

International and U.S. studies have shown that HBOT prevents progression to chronic disability from repeated concussions. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy dissolves oxygen into the cerebrospinal fluid (along with all body fluids) bathing the brain with up to twenty times the normal concentration. This reestablishes oxygen to tissues that have been compromised or have been receiving less than normal amounts of blood flow and thereby promotes healing.
